The Travel Hygiene Guide
Travel breaks routine. The bathroom isn't yours, the schedule isn't yours, and somewhere between the airport and the hotel you realise your usual products are 4,000 km away. This guide is for the part of your trip nobody Instagram-posts.
The non-negotiables (what goes in the day-pack)
These five items live in the personal item, not the checked bag:
- **Hand sanitiser, 20–50 ml.** TSA-friendly, alcohol-based, with moisturiser so your hands don't crack on dry cabin air. - **Disposable seat covers, 10 pack.** Airport restrooms, train stations, taxi-stop loos. Flushable so you don't need to carry waste. - **Individual wet wipes.** Sachets, not a resealable pack — humidity in a backpack kills the seal. - **Pocket sanitising spray.** Tray tables, seat-belt buckles, hotel TV remotes. Spray, wait ten seconds, sit. - **An intimate freshening option** — wipes or a travel-size wash bottle, depending on flight duration.
Long-haul flights
Anything over six hours, plan a reset midway. Walk to the lavatory before the meal service queue forms. Wipe down. Brush teeth. You'll land feeling like a person, not luggage.
Hotel rooms
The remote control and light switches harbour the most bacteria in any hotel room — neither gets cleaned between guests. Three sprays of pocket sanitiser handles it. Same for the lift buttons.
Public restrooms in transit hubs
The hover technique is exhausting after the third hour of layover. A flushable seat cover takes three seconds and removes the question entirely.
Returning home
Wash everything in the day-pack the day you land. Wipes and seat covers get tossed; sprays and bottles get refilled. The kit's only useful if it's ready for the next trip before you've unpacked the last one.

Travel is exhausting enough without hygiene anxiety. Pack the kit once, restock after every trip, and the cognitive load drops to zero.
